FAQ - Digital Toll & Vignette for Austria
Tolls are compulsory for the use of Austrian motorways and speedways. This toll obligation has existed in Austria since 1997 with the introduction of the vignette. The revenue from the toll is still used exclusively for the maintenance and construction of motorways and speedways and tunnels.
This toll is levied on vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tonnes in the form of a (digital) vignette or, in the case of cost-intensive sections, in the form of a (digital) section toll.
The advantages of ordering an austrian toll product online (i.e. digital vignette and/or section toll) via the ADAC toll portal are:
-> Official online sales partner of ASFINAG (austrian toll provider)
-> Immediate validity of the toll products (1-Day, 10-Day, Section toll)
-> Free of charge compared to gray market providers
-> 24/7 availability
-> No queuing and therefore no loss of time (e.g. when buying at gas stations)
In just a few steps, you can buy a digital vignette or section toll for Austria in the ADAC toll portal. No registration needed.
How does it work? Here is a brief summary of the individual steps of the booking process:
Step 1: Select your vehicle (car or motorbike).
Step 2: Select your product, either vignette or section toll. If you select a section toll, please select the route(s) for which you require a digital section toll ticket.
Step 3: If you select Vignette, select the validity period (immediate start or at a later date). In the case of a section toll, validity generally begins immediately upon purchase.
Step 4: Enter your vehicle license plate number.
Step 5: Select the payment method and enter your personal details or e-mail address.
Step 6: A final check of the order overview and then click on Book with obligation to pay.
Following your booking, you will receive an order confirmation and an invoice by email.

A vignette is compulsory for the use of Austrian motorways and speedways. The Austrian toll operator ASFINAG charges a section toll for particularly cost-intensive routes such as tunnels, bridges or mountain passes. This replaces the vignette requirement for certain segments of a motorway (see list below).
Note: However, depending on how you access these motorway sections subject to the route toll, a vignette may be required. For example, when entering the A13 Brenner motorway via the A12 Inntal motorway, you need a valid vignette for using the A12 motorway in addition to the section toll for the Brenner.
Motorway sections subject to route tolls:
A13 Brenner motorway: The entire A13 is subject to a section toll
A 10 Tauern motorway: Between Flachau and Rennweg (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels)
S 16 Arlberg motorway: Between St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg (Arlberg tunnel)
A 11 Karawanken motorway - southbound: Between St. Jakob im Rosental and the national border in the Karawanken tunnel
A9 Pyhrn motorway:
Bosruck Tunnel: Between Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning
Gleinalm Tunnel: Between St. Michael and Übelbach
In Austria, a vignette is required for all motorways and expressways. When using certain motorway segments (see list below), a route-dependent toll, the so-called section toll, is charged instead of the vignette. Please note, however, that depending on the entrance to the following section toll segments, a valid vignette may also be necessary.
A13 Brenner motorway: The entire A 13 is subject to route tolls
A 10 Tauern Autobahn: Between Flachau and Rennweg (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels)
S 16 Arlberg expressway: Between St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg (Arlberg tunnel)
A 11 Karawanken Autobahn - direction south: Between St. Jakob im Rosental and the state border in the Karawanken Tunnel
A9 Pyhrn motorway:
Bosrucktunnel: Between Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning
Gleinalmtunnel: Between St. Michael and Bösebach
Yes, the following motorway segments are exempt from the vignette requirement:
the A 1 West motorway toll section between the state border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction,
the A 12 Inntal motorway toll section between the state border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction,
the A 14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway toll section between the state border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction and
the A 26 Linz motorway toll section (currently still under construction)
If you have not received an order confirmation by email after booking a vignette or section toll for Austria, but your trip is imminent, please do the following:
Please use the validity check of the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG to check whether a valid vignette or section toll exists for your license plate number.

If yes, then you can drive with peace of mind! You have successfully purchased a valid vignette and/or section toll via the toll portal and can drive through/to Austria.
If no, then your order with us was not successful and there is no valid vignette or section toll for the license plate entered.
Please order a new vignette or section toll, otherwise you risk a fine (so-called replacement toll) of €120.
If, despite the unsuccessful order, the vignette or route toll price has already been debited by us, we will of course reimburse you.
The Austrian vignette is available for four different validity periods:
1) Digital 1-day vignette (daily vignette): This new vignette, which is only available in digital form, is valid for one calendar day from 00:00 a.m. till 11:59 p.m.
For example: If you buy the 1-day vignette on 6 December at 09:00 a.m. with immediate validity, it is valid until 11:59 p.m. on 6 December. If you buy it on 6 December for validity from 8 December, it will be valid from 00:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on 8 December.

2) Digital 10-day vignette: This vignette is valid for ten consecutive calendar days. You decide whether the validity begins immediately upon purchase or at a later date directly at the time of purchase.
For example: Buy the vignette on 15 March and set the start of validity to 18 March. The vignette is then valid from 18 March up to and including 27 March 11:59 p.m..

3) 2-Month Vignette: With this vignette you can drive on Austrian motorways or motorways for two months. It is valid from the date of the month of purchase until the same date two months later.
For example: You buy the vignette on 15 March. The 2-month vignette is then valid until 11:59 p.m. on 15 May.
4) Annual or Yearly Vignette: The annual vignette is actually a 14-month vignette if it is purchased on the first day of validity. It is always valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January, 11:59 p.m. of the following year.
Since 2018, there has also been a digital vignette for the use of motorways and motorways in Austria in addition to the classic adhesive vignette. The vehicle license plate number is registered when the vignette is purchased and its validity is checked manually by the ASFINAG Service and Control Service and by permanently installed cameras on motorways and dual carriageways.
Advantages of the digital vignette:
No sticking and removal of the adhesive vignette after use
Vehicle license plate number can be changed online (before the start of validity)
The validity period can be changed online (before the actual start of validity)
The 1-Day vignette and the 10-Day vignette can be purchased online via the ADAC toll portal. The vignette purchased via the toll portal is valid immediately, if desired. In addition, no service fees are charged for online purchases. Moreover to the digital vignette, the digital section toll for the A13 Brenner, A10 Tauern, S16 Arlberg, A9 Pyhrn and A11 Karawanken toll segments can also be purchased online in the toll portal.

Bosrucktunnel: Between Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning

The new 1-Day and the 10-Day Vignette purchased via the ADAC toll portal have no waiting period and are therefore valid immediately. Of course, the start of validity can also be set for a later date in the future if desired.
When ordering a digital vignette on the ADAC toll portal, enter the vehicle type, desired validity period or start date and your vehicle license plate number. If desired, the digital vignette can become valid immediately upon completion of the purchase.
Automatic vignette control cameras installed on motorway bridges and the service and control service of the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG randomly check whether a vignette has been registered for the respective license plate number/vehicle.
IMPORTANT: Please check that you have entered your license plate number correctly when ordering, otherwise your digital vignette will not be valid and you will have to pay a fine.
If you are unsure or you did not receive a booking/order confirmation, please use the validity check of the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG to check whether a valid vignette or section toll exists for your license plate number.

If you use the motorways and speedways in Austria without a valid vignette, you will have to pay a fine (so-called substitute toll) of 123 € (car) or 65 € (motorbike). Anyone who is unable to pay this fine immediately must expect to be reported to the police and fined 3000 €.

For cars carrying a trailer or caravan, only the total weight of the car as a towing vehicle is relevant for determining the vignette. If this does not exceed the permissible total weight of 3.5 tonnes, only one vignette is required, namely the one for the car.
In the case of motorbikes with a sidecar, the sidecar counts as a trailer and is therefore not subject to a vignette.
A new vignette year always begins on 1 December of the respective year and ends on 30 November of the following year. As soon as the toll provider ASFINAG makes the digital vignettes for the new toll year available (usually at the beginning of November each year), they can be purchased in advance via the ADAC toll portal. Accordingly, the months from December onwards are greyed out in the booking section and therefore cannot be clicked on.
Please note: Even if advance sales begin in November of a given year, the respective vignette (1-day or 10-day) is only valid from 1 December.

A 10 Tauern motorway: Between Flachau and Rennweg (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels)
S 16 Arlberg motorway: Between St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg (Arlberg tunnel)

A9 Pyhrn motorway:
Bosruck Tunnel: Between Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning

The digital section toll can be booked in the ADAC toll portal for one or two single trips and is valid immediately. A single trip is valid for one trip in one direction. It can be used once within 365 days from the date of purchase.
With the section toll for the A11 Karawanken motorway, you can only purchase a single trip ticket for the southbound direction. The route to the north is tolled by the Slovenian motorway company DARS. The border is also located in the almost eight kilometres long Karawanken tunnel.
Yes, because vignettes are required on all Austrian motorways. So if you use the A9 on more than just the two section toll segments, Bosruck (Spital/Pyhrn junction and Ardning junction) and/or Gleinalm (St. Michael and Bösebach junction), then a section toll ticket is not sufficient.

No, in principle you do not need a vignette to use the A13 Brenner motorway, however you need the Brenner section toll.
Please note, however, that a vignette may be required depending on the route you take. If you join the A13 motorway via the Inntal motorway A12, you will need a vignette. On the other hand, no vignette is required when entering the Brenner motorway at the Innsbruck-Süd junction.
