Tyres scrutinised

  • ADAC committed to more safety
ADAC tyre tests are used by many consumers in their buying decision. This market relevance contributes to more safety on German and European roads. In cooperation with European automobile clubs and consumer protection organisations, ADAC annually tests two dimensions of winter and summer tyres respectively. In addition, comparative tests are conducted – e.g. all-season tyres versus winter tyres – as well as special programmes for 4x4 tyres and original equipment tyres.
  • 2,000 tyres
ADAC anonymously buys some 2,000 tyres on the free market each year. The selection of dimensions and brands depends on the market relevance. Lowpriced products are also included in the tests which are implemented on testing premises in Europe, including France, Italy, Switzerland and the North of Germany. The scope of test criteria is enormous. For the comprehensive evaluation of tyres, all tyre characteristics must be tested and assessed. ADAC and its partners stand alone worldwide in their testing of tyres on ice and the wear and tear of tyres.
  • The ADAC tyre testing process
    • Dry road
Top lap times are not relevant on dry roads. Tyres should provide safety
reserves when taken to their limit and their road performance should be
effortless and predictable since this helps a driver to relax and avoid driving
errors. For this purpose, ADAC testers evaluate the reaction to steering input
and cornering as well as rear axle stability.
    • Wet road surface
Tyre behaviour under wet conditions is tested on proving grounds designed
for the constant and even irrigation of test tracks. In addition to braking
distances measured on different surfaces as well as aquaplaning tests both
on a straight line and in a curve, the tyres are submitted to a subjective
evaluation during a handling course which also includes lap timing.
Again, ADAC testers focus on effortless road performance.
    • Winter conditions
Winter and all-season tyres are also tested on snow and ice. Great efforts
are involved when examining braking and starting behaviour of tyres on
snow-covered roads. While ADAC testers take the vehicle to its limit when
driving up and down a mountain pass for a subjective impression, an ice rink
is rented to assess braking and cornering.
    • Noises
The engine is always switched off during noise assessment to be able to
concentrate on the noise from the tyres. To keep wind noises to a minimum,
maximum speed is around 80kph. Two testers are inside the car to evaluate
interior noises while the vehicle decelerates from 80kph to approximately
20kph. Exterior noises are recorded when the vehicle passes at 80kph and
subjectively evaluated later. During daily trips preparing for tyre testing,
particularly noisy tyres are documented and selected for extra testing.
    • Impact on fuel consumption
Fuel consumption is measured at constant speeds of 80, 100 and 130kph.
    • Tyre wear
Tyres are tested with mass-production vehicles in a convoy for over
12,000km or on a specially designed test rig. Tread depth around the entire
circumference of the tyre and weight loss are measured at regular intervals.
The predicted life span is extrapolated to the minimum legal depth of 1.6mm.
    • Fast mode testing
Testing takes place on a dedicated roller test rig on the basis of DIN 78051
with additional load for a higher safety reserve.
    • Validation and reproducibility of measurement and test results
To validate results, all tests are repeated several times applying very narrow
tolerance limits. To identify potential changes in the test environment, tyres
with known features called basic tyres are regularly used in addition to the
      test tyres.
