Better protection for children

The protection of our youngest road users is a major focus of ADAC’s testing activity. For years now the club has reliably and successfully worked to promote safety.
  • International cooperation
A key factor is the ADAC child seat test launched each year in cooperation with partner clubs all over Europe and European consumer protection organisations such as “Stiftung Warentest”.

ADAC Technik Zentrum conducts comprehensive child seat tests under real-life conditions. In addition to testing seats in all available weight categories, ADAC systematically checks the safety aspects of new technologies such as the Isofix system and verifies how customary CRS compare to integrated child seats.

  • Stringent test criteria
ADAC’s test criteria by far exceed the standards applied for CRS type approval. An example is the side impact test which is not included in the ECE type approval procedure, but has been a standard element of the ADAC test for years.
  • Ease of use assessment becoming more and more important
Thanks to years of testing, the safety potential of many child seats has continuously improved. The focus now shifts to the handling of child seats, where there is still considerable scope for improvement. ADAC attaches great importance to the fact that CRS are easy to use and the risks of handling errors are kept to a minimum.
  • Strong public awareness
Not least thanks to its stringent test requirements, the ADAC child seat test results play a major role in the consumers’ purchase decision. About 50 million consumers are interested in the results of the tests launched and developed by ADAC.
  • For more safety
In view of its strong public feedback, ADAC tests are highly valued by manufacturers. A good ADAC test rating is an important sales argument to be used for credible advertising by the industry. This shows that ADAC was instrumental in bringing about further enhancement of child seats. Manufacturers have already removed a number of safety deficits revealed in the ADAC test. The result is that in 2007 the first child seat was awarded the rating of “very good”.

    Safety
Frontal and side impacts are simulated (at 64 kph and 50 kph respectively)
with a four-door vehicle bodyshell mounted to a test sled. Impact loads are
measured on differently sized child dummies. Belt routing, size adjustment,
seat stability and head support are assessed subjectively.

    Usability
A child seat is installed in a car for test purposes with the aim to identify
the misuse potential. Testing covers buckling up and unstrapping the child/
dummy, installation, removal and adaptation of the seat (for larger/smaller
child) and a check of the instruction manual.

    Comfort
During the test installation of the seat we verify the leg support, upholstery
or uncovered parts and the child’s field of vision.

    Use
Several testers check seat cleaning and assess workmanship.

    ADAC verdict
The overall rating only relates to safety and ease of use, with the lower
    rating tipping the scale.

Crashtest
